After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Lovington, the Alamogordo Tigers were happy to have found some success on Tuesday. They snuck past Chapin with a 38-34 victory. Given Alamogordo's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 43rd in New Mexico, while Chapin is ranked 849th in Texas), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Alamogordo was led to victory by Elizabeth Needham and Abby Vazquez. Needham scored six points along with 19 rebounds, while Vazquez scored 20 points. Those 19 rebounds set a new season-high mark for her.
Despite the loss, Chapin saw an underclassman step up: Samantha Wise scored 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Wise scored a full 35.3% of Chapin's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Vanessa Mora, who scored three points along with six rebounds.
The win got Alamogordo back to even at 6-6. As for Chapin, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-14.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Alamogordo's road trip will continue as they head out to face Santa Teresa at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Santa Teresa comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last four games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. As for Chapin, they will head out on the road to face off against Jefferson at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Jefferson has now lost 11 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since November 17.
