Two dominant guards in Aniyah Shields and Jordan Pete are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Warren Warriors will be home for the holidays to greet the Sotomayor WILDCATS at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Sotomayor is hoping to do what Taft couldn't on Wednesday: put an end to Warren's winning streak, which now stands at four games. Warren blew past Taft 59-34. Given the Warriors' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 143rd, while the Raiders are ranked 890th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
12/11/24 @ Taft | 4 |
12/06/24 vs Stevens | 6 |
12/04/24 @ Holmes | 3 |
11/26/24 @ Marshall | 6 |
11/23/24 vs Flour Bluff | 5 |
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Warren to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shields, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 20 points in addition to seven boards and four steals. Shields is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Makayla Davis, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 boards.
Warren smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Sotomayor waltzed into their match on Saturday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They blew past the Raiders 75-32.
Sotomayor's win came from a few key players Warren will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jah'Dae Bussey, who went 8 of 15 on her way to 26 points along with six boards and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Pete, who went 8 of 16 on her way to 19 points in addition to six rebounds and five assists.
Warren is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.3 points per game. As for Sotomayor, they pushed their record up to 15-7 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Warren has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Sotomayor struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.9 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Warren was able to grind out a solid win over Sotomayor in their previous matchup back in January, winning 44-36. Does Warren have another victory up their sleeve, or will Sotomayor turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
