Goldsboro is a perfect 10-0 against Spring Creek since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Cougars will host the Gators at 6:30 p.m. Goldsboro's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three contests, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Goldsboro might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 8-1 to American Leadership Academy-Johnston, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Goldsboro saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Avery Grant, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Spring Creek). They were the clear victors by a 23-9 margin over Eastern Wayne last Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Gators, who have now won five matches by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Rylan Kornegay and Camden Jones made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Kornegay tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Jones tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Spring Creek is 2-1 when Kornegay allows two or fewer hits, but 4-6 otherwise. At bat, Kornegay got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, five runs, and one RBI, while Jones went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those four stolen bases gave Kornegay a new career-high.
In other batting news, Braden Bell was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Spring Creek's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 1-7 when he doesn't). Nick Smith was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Spring Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .650. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Spring Creek has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Goldsboro, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-14.
Spring Creek's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Goldsboro hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. It's a different story for Spring Creek, though, as they've only averaged .238. Will they be able to contain Goldsboro's hitters?
Goldsboro took their victory against Spring Creek when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 16-9 score. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Gators have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
