Cherryville hasn't had much luck against Kings Mountain recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Cherryville Ironmen will welcome the Kings Mountain Mountaineers at 5:00 p.m. Cherryville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.5 runs per game this season.
Cherryville had taken East Gaston down for two straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Tuesday. Cherryville lost 13-3 to East Gaston.
Alexis McSwain was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
Even though they lost, Cherryville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Kings Mountain came tearing into Tuesday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Red Raiders get on the board and left with a 6-0 victory. The Mountaineers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by six runs or more this season.
Maddie Huffman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 17 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kayla McSwain, who scored a run and stole Three bases. while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Anna Wooten was another key player, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with three stolen bases.
Kings Mountain pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.0 runs on average over those games. As for Cherryville, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-3.
Both Cherryville and Kings Mountain just can't seem to miss. Cherryville has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.2 hits per game. However, it's not like Kings Mountain struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.7 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cherryville might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Kings Mountain in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Will Cherryville have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
