Football Recap: Tyler Gustafson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Monmouth Regional over Point Pleasant Beach

If Monmouth Regional was feeling good fresh off their 41-14 takedown of Keyport/Hudson Regional last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Falcons fell 41-36 to the Point Pleasant Beach Garnet Gulls on Friday. Despite 132 more yards than the Garnet Gulls, the Falcons couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Several Falcons players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Tyler Gustafson, who rushed for 229 yards and one TD while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. With that strong performance, Gustafson is now averaging an impressive 121.8 rushing yards per game. Donovan Hicks also helped with two scores in total.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Point Pleasant Beach to victory, but perhaps none more so than Matthew Rossi, who threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.1 yards per attempt. Elijah Ives did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 142 receiving yards.

Monmouth Regional's record is now 2-2. As for Point Pleasant Beach, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-1.

Looking ahead, Monmouth Regional will welcome Toms River East at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Raiders' defense has only allowed 13 points per game this season, so the Falcons' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Point Pleasant Beach, they will venture away from home to square off against Keyport/Hudson Regional at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
