The Lutheran Lions had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.9 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Saturday. They rang in the new year with a 61-54 victory over Severance. Given Lutheran's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while Severance is ranked 90th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Despite the loss, Severance still got an impressive performance from Brady Varney, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. Those 21 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Varney, who scored 12 points.
Lutheran's win bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Severance, their loss dropped their record down to 5-4.
Lutheran will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against D'Evelyn at 7:00 p.m. That game will pit two of the most dominant players against one another: Taj Kumar and Braydon Jacob. As for Severance, they will head out on the road to face off against Skyline at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Skyline has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 460 points over their last seven games.
