Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Maki Mitchell and Evan Peters Lead Commerce to Victory

There's no place like home for Commerce, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Athens Academy Spartans on Tuesday, sneaking past 46-44. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tigers have posted since November 21, 2024.

Leading Commerce to victory were Evan Peters and Maki Mitchell. Peters dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards, while Mitchell went 5 of 11 on his way to 13 points and six boards. That's the most rebounds Mitchell has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Essien Lockleer, who posted five points and five assists.

Commerce's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-7. As for Athens Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Commerce will head out to face off against Oglethorpe County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Commerce is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.4 points per game this season. As for Athens Academy, they will venture away from home to square off against Banks County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
