The Dixie Heights Colonels will head out on the road to challenge the Rowan County Vikings at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Dixie Heights is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Dixie Heights and Lloyd Memorial, and Dixie Heights kept the tradition alive. The Colonels' pitcher stepped up to hand the Juggernauts a 15-0 shutout on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Colonels considering their two-run performance the game before.
Ava Niemer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Niemer was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Emma Burford and Ashlyn McHargue did most of the damage at the plate: Burford went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while McHargue went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most hits McHargue has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Sam Skees, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Dixie Heights hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Rowan County hadn't done well against Raceland recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Vikings came out on top against the Rams by a score of 7-4.
Like Dixie Heights, Rowan County also got a great game from a two-way player: Kassi Perkins. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Perkins was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lauryn Eastham, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. Ryleigh Howard was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Rowan County is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Dixie Heights, their record now sits at 7-8.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Dixie Heights hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. However, it's not like Rowan County struggles in that department as they've averaged .340. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Dixie Heights might still be hurting after the 12-2 defeat they got from Rowan County in their previous meeting back in May of 2025. Can the Colonels avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
