The Newport Wildcats waltzed into their game on Wednesday with 14 straight wins but they left with 15. Everything went their way against Newport Central Catholic as Newport made off with a 73-51 victory. Newport has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 20 points or more this season.
Newport was led to victory by Tay Kinney and Jabari Covington. Kinney scored 20 points, while Covington scored 22 points. Covington has been hot recently, having posted 22 or more points the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was James Turner, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
Newport is on a roll lately: they've won 16 of their last 17 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-3 record this season. As for Newport Central Catholic, their defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-17.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will take on Conner at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Conner knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight matchups -- so hopefully Newport likes a good challenge. As for Newport Central Catholic, they will be playing at home against Cooper on Saturday. Cooper will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something Newport Central Catholic surely won't give up without a fight.
