Orion hasn't had much luck against Rock Island recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Chargers will welcome the Rocks at 4:30 p.m. Orion has given up an average of 8.6 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Orion is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest loss since March 30th on Monday. They came up short against Riverdale, falling 16-4.
Autumn Hoftender made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Kadence Hammer, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Rock Island had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Galesburg an 11-0 shutout on Tuesday. Considering the Rocks have won four matchups by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Tinley James looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched.
At the plate, AJ Lincoln was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, two triples, and five RBI. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Ella DeJonghe was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and two RBI.
Orion's defeat dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Rock Island, their win bumped their record up to 5-7.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Orion hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .373. However, it's not like Rock Island struggles in that department as they've averaged .329. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Orion might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from Rock Island in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Will the Chargers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
