Poston Butte is 3-0 against Arizona College Prep since January of 2023, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The pair will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Poston Butte posted their biggest victory yet this season on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Combs 53-19 on the road. Given Poston Butte's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 88th, while Combs is ranked 209th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Symirah Gray continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 23 points along with five assists and four steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Kyla Boyd was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five steals.
Meanwhile, Arizona College Prep waltzed into their matchup on Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They were the clear victor by a 48-27 margin over American Leadership Academy.
Jaylee Aulds and Mariela Navarrete were among the main playmakers for Arizona College Prep as the former scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and the latter scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Warren, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
Poston Butte has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season. As for Arizona College Prep, their win bumped their record up to 10-12.
Tuesday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Poston Butte have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 27.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Arizona College Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 34.2 rebounds per game. Given Poston Butte's sizeable advantage in that area, Arizona College Prep will need to find a way to close that gap.
Poston Butte skirted past Arizona College Prep 35-32 when the teams last played last Wednesday. Will Poston Butte repeat their success, or does Arizona College Prep have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
