The Sahuaro Cougars gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They blew past Sahuarita 69-26 at home. With Sahuaro ahead 49-15 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Cassandra Coolidge had an outrageously good game as she scored 29 points. Kristen Valdez was another key contributor, scoring 10 points along with 3 steals.
Sahuarita's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Camila Villalobos, who scored 5 points along with 8 rebounds. Villalobos is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Emma Benitez, who scored 5 points.
Sahuaro's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Sahuarita, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sahuaro will take on Sabino at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sabino will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 153rd, while Sahuaro is ranked 18th). As for Sahuarita, they will be playing at home against Pueblo at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pueblo knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully Sahuarita likes a good challenge.
