While it was all tied up 27-27 at halftime, the Oakcrest Chargers were not quite the Saint John Paul the Great Catholic Wolves's equal in the second half on Monday. Oakcrest took a 51-46 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wolves. Oakcrest's defeat continues an unfortunate trend for the squad, making it three in a row.
Oakcrest's loss came despite strong showings from Mary Mehan and Kate Newsome. Mehan dropped a double-double on ten points and 24 rebounds, while Newsome scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and four blocks. Mehan is crushing the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Saint John Paul the Great Catholic to victory, but perhaps none more so than Angelica Morales, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 rebounds. Morales has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last eight times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Saleema Tinner, who scored 15 points along with three steals.
Oakcrest now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Saint John Paul the Great Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 8-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oakcrest's road trip will continue as they head out to face the at 5:15 p.m. on February 2nd. Calvary Temple will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Saint John Paul the Great Catholic, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Gators at 6:00 p.m. on January 30th. Saint Gertrude will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive.
