Athens Academy kicked off their season on the road on Friday and hit a couple of potholes. They took a 52-34 bruising from the Aquinas Fightin' Irish. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Spartans of the 31-20 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in November of 2024.
Aquinas' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Turner Stevenson led the charge by throwing for 338 yards and six TDs while completing 77.3% of his passes. The Fightin' Irish's leading receiver Jack Rhodes was Stevenson's top target yet again, picking up 193 receiving yards and four scores.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Athens Academy will head out to challenge Savannah Country Day at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Aquinas, they are packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will square off against Bryan County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
