The Crusaders were the clear victors by a 14-8 margin over Irvington Preparatory Academy on Saturday. Olivia Covarrubias made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Indianapolis Scecina Memorial let Kayley Campbell and Sydney Gilbreath run wild. Campbell went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run, while Gilbreath went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. Those runs were Gilbreath's first of the season. Makayla Gary was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Indianapolis Scecina Memorial kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Indianapolis Lutheran unfortunately witnessed the end of their eight-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell just short of Mt. Vernon by a score of 4-3.
Not much got past Gracie Boggs, who gave up just three hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Mt. Vernon off the board. Boggs has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Indianapolis Lutheran saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Zoe Sondag, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Indianapolis Lutheran's defeat dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Indianapolis Scecina Memorial, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-7.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Indianapolis Scecina Memorial hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .314. However, it's not like Indianapolis Lutheran struggles in that department as they've averaged .325. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
