The biggest high school football game of the weekend in California was a huge Trinity League showdown between No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and No. 5 Servite (Anaheim). The Monarchs held on for a 24-17 win to improve to 3-0. The defense started the game with a pick-six from three-star junior cornerback
Cameron Sidney and the defense ended the night with a strip-sack on the final play.
The loss drops the Friars to 2-2 but both losses have been close contests against the top-two teams in the state. Mater Dei will face No. 14 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) on April 9 before a matchup with No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) to close out the season.
The Braves cruised to a dominant 66-14 win over JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) and the 2019 MaxPreps national champs are 4-0 this spring.
Norco pulled off one of the biggest upsets on Saturday snapping No. 3 Centennial's (Corona) 57-game Big VIII win streak after beating the Huskies 38-36.
Junior quarterback
Kyle Crum threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns while adding 117 yards on the ground and another score. It was the first time the Cougars have knocked off Centennial since Nov. 6, 2009.
Expect them to make a big jump into the California Top 25 rankings next week.
Chaminade (West Hills) knocked off No. 13 Bishop Amat (La Puente) to improve its record to 2-2. The Eagles have won their last two games after beating the Lancers 38-19.
The best performance of the week came from No. 9 Los Alamitos' five-star sophomore quarterback
Malachi Nelson on Friday. He completed 13-of-13 passes for 374 yards and seven touchdowns in the first half. The Griffins improved to 4-0 after beating Huntington Beach 63-14.
