After flying high against the Valley Christian Eagles on Saturday, the Brookfield Warriors came back down to earth. Brookfield took a 48-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of LaBrae. While losing is never fun, Brookfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 616th, while LaBrae is ranked 217th).
Several Warriors players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cailey Wellman, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 16 rebounds. Wellman scored a full 40.5% of Brookfield's points, the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Mya Jumper was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds.
LaBrae's win on Monday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ella Kuszmaul, who scored 20 points. The contest was Kuszmaul's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Marissa Levensky, who scored six points along with seven rebounds and seven steals.
Brookfield has fallen quite a ways from their 17-6 record last season and are now at 2-5. As for LaBrae, their win bumped their record up to 6-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Brookfield will square off against Memorial at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Memorial comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 24 points in their last four games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for LaBrae, they will head out on the road to face off against Liberty at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Liberty is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
