Even though the Northeast Guilford Rams scored an imposing 58 points on Friday, the Morehead Panthers still came out on top. Morehead strolled past Northeast Guilford with points to spare, taking the game 76-58. Given Morehead's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 78th, while Northeast Guilford is ranked 309th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Morehead's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Makel Smith, who scored 19 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. The game was Smith's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Jordan Chandler was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Despite the defeat, Northeast Guilford saw an underclassman step up: Aaryn Tate scored 25 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jackson Hester, who scored 13 points.
The victory makes it two in a row for Morehead and bumps their season record up to 3-1. As for Northeast Guilford, they now have a losing record at 1-2.
Morehead will look to defend their home court on Friday against Rockingham County at 7:30 p.m. As for Northeast Guilford, they will head out on the road to face off against Williams at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
