Skutt Catholic is 6-1 against Nebraska City since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The SkyHawks will square off against the Pioneers at 4:30 p.m. Skutt Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Skutt Catholic is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nebraska's top teams: Bellevue West, who was ranked fourth at the time (Skutt Catholic was ranked fifth). The SkyHawks' pitchers stepped up to hand the Thunderbirds a 3-0 shutout on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the SkyHawks.
Braxtyn Blank-Jimenez looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Skutt Catholic's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Gage Guenther, who scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Nebraska City's offense. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Seward on Monday. That's two games in a row now that the Pioneers have lost by exactly four runs.
Casen Dalinghaus spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.
Skutt Catholic pushed their record up to 9-2 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Nebraska City, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season.
Skutt Catholic's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. The SkyHawks have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Nebraska City, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Skutt Catholic continue to outrun the ball?
Skutt Catholic skirted past Nebraska City 2-0 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the SkyHawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
