The Marcellus Mustangs will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the General Brown Lions at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Marcellus has seven straight victories, General Brown has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Marcellus has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matchups by 20 points or more this season. They were the clear victor by a 58-37 margin over Skaneateles. Given Marcellus' advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked seventh, while Skaneateles is ranked 326th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Marcellus to victory, but perhaps none more so than Will Burnett, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Burnett also posted two blocks for the first time this season. Will Kershaw was another key contributor, scoring 16 points.
Meanwhile, General Brown's 18-6 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They took a serious blow against Chittenango on Monday, falling 79-29. General Brown was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 45-19.
Marcellus' win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-0. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 30.33 points. As for General Brown, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.
Marcellus strolled past General Brown in their previous meeting back in February by a score of 69-51. The rematch might be a little tougher for Marcellus since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
