The Sutherland Sailors's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. The New Year welcomed they with a 63-28 whooping from Sandhills/Thedford. While losing is never fun, Sutherland can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while Sandhills/Thedford is ranked 61st).
When it comes to explaining why Sutherland lost, one person who can't be blamed is Glory Naughtin. Despite the final result, she scored eight points.
Sutherland bumped their record down to 1-7 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Sandhills/Thedford, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-2.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sutherland won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Perkins County at 6:00 p.m. on January 6th. Perkins County is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 53.2 points per game. As for Sandhills/Thedford, they will head out on the road to face off against Anselmo-Merna at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Anselmo-Merna focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday.
