The Creighton Prep Junior Jays will venture away from home to take on the Millard South Patriots at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Creighton Prep is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Creighton Prep is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nebraska's top teams: Papillion-LaVista South, who was ranked second at the time (Creighton Prep was ranked 16th). The Junior Jays fell just short of the Titans by a score of 6-5 on Thursday. The Junior Jays' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Cal Anthony and Braden Caito did some serious damage despite the final result: Anthony went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Caito went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Logan Burchfiel was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Millard South fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Elkhorn South on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 7-4 to the Storm. Like the Junior Jays, the Patriots also had to let a streak go: they had won three straight, but that streak is no more.
Tyler Albert was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits.
On the hitting side, Jaxson Appuhn was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Another player making a difference was Will Thomas, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Creighton Prep's loss dropped their record down to 15-12. As for Millard South, their defeat dropped their record down to 19-8.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Creighton Prep has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.9 hits per game. However, it's not like Millard South struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Creighton Prep suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Millard South in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Junior Jays avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
