The Kirtland Hornets will take on the Brush Arcs at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Kirtland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Kirtland is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since May 8, 2024 on Tuesday. They lost 7-1 to Crestwood. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Hornets' biggest loss of the season was also their lowest-scoring.
Kirtland saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Casey Carkhuff, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Brush, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They never let Cleveland Central Catholic get on the board and left with a 14-0 win on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Arcs in their matchups with the Ironmen: they've now won three in a row.
Braylon Davis made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Brush is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-4 otherwise. Davis was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That hit was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Jayden Amey was incredible, going 1-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Keith Feagin, Jr., who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Brush always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Brush pushed their record up to 4-5 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Kirtland, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 11-1.
Brush's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Kirtland has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449. It's a different story for Brush, though, as they've only averaged .354. Will they be able to contain Kirtland's hitters?
Kirtland couldn't quite get it done against Brush in their previous matchup back in April of 2018 as they fell 9-4. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
