Basketball Recap: Roanoke Catholic Piles Up the Points Against Southwest Virginia Academy

A well-balanced attack led Roanoke Catholic over Southwest Virginia Academy in every quarter on their way to victory on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Roanoke Catholic Celtics blew the Southwest Virginia Academy Conquerors out of the water with an 83-38 final score. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 48-18.

Roanoke Catholic was led to victory by Jayden Johnson and Demarcus Brown. Johnson went 10 for 13 on his way to 23 points, while Brown went 6 of 11 en route to 17 points in addition to six assists and five boards. That's the most points Johnson has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Yajae Hairston, who posted ten points.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Roanoke Catholic was working as a unit and finished the game with 21 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southwest Virginia Academy only racked up two assists.

Despite the loss, Southwest Virginia Academy had strong showings from Gabriel Bishop, who put up 18 points, and Jude Shelor, who had nine points and five rebounds. The match was Bishop's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Rylan Janney, who posted two points and six rebounds.

Roanoke Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a massive bump to their 7-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.8 points per game. As for Southwest Virginia Academy, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 10-5.

Roanoke Catholic will welcome Fishburne Military at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Roanoke Catholic knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Fishburne Military likes a good challenge. As for Southwest Virginia Academy, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Dayspring Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Southwest Virginia Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.1 points per game this season.
