The date is finally set. The long discussed Hollywood production of the Neil Hayes book entitled, "When the Game Stands Tall" — the story of
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) football program — opens August 22.
The trailer of the movie was just released and it stars Jim Caviezel ("The Passion of Christ," "Bobby Jones," and "The Thin Red Line"), who plays De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur and Michael Chiklis (star of TV show The Shield) who plays longtime defensive coordinator Terry Eidson.
De La Salle's program has been made famous by all the winning — Ladouceur's 399 career wins before stepping down in 2012 — and its national record 151-game win streak, but the movie's trailer proclaims, "It's not about sports, it's about. … growing up … forgiveness. … commitment. … and brotherhood."
See when De La Salle's 151-game win streak endedIn real life, Ladouceur and former players have often said the program has never been about winning. It was simply a byproduct of doing things the right way, something the movie — and more so Hayes' book — tried to display.

Much of the movie's drama centers around the shooting death of one of De La Salle's greatest players, Terrence Kelly, who was murdered the night before he was to leave on scholarship for the University of Oregon, and a heart attack Ladouceur suffered.
Both happened the offseason before the team's win streak came to an end in 2004.
