The Horizon Hawks won the last time they faced the Apopka Blue Darters, and things went their way on Thursday too. Horizon strolled past Apopka with points to spare, taking the game 56-41. Given Horizon's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 129th, while Apopka is ranked 269th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Horizon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Molly Smith led the charge by scoring 18 points along with five assists and five steals. Smith has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Amaya Mitchell was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Horizon and bumps their season record up to 10-4. As for Apopka, their loss dropped their record down to 8-10.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Horizon will challenge East River at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th. As for Apopka, they will head out on the road to face off against Colonial at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Colonial will be looking to keep their seven-game home win streak alive.
