University is 0-5 against Cathedral since May of 2019 but things could change on Thursday. The Trailblazers will challenge the Fighting Irish at 5:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (University 4.1, Cathedral 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
On Wednesday, University needed a bit of extra time to put away Lawrence North. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 victory over the Wildcats. Winning may never get old, but the Trailblazers sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
University let Beckett Suh and Griffin Wright run wild. Suh went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Wright got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs. Cooper Burnett was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, Cathedral made sure to put some runs up on the board against Herron on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish blew past the Achaeans 11-0. The result was nothing new for the Fighting Irish, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Junior Belford looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Connor Christiansen, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Eli Sinsabaugh, who went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and one run.
Cathedral always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Herron only posted an OBP of .316.
Cathedral has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for University, they pushed their record up to 11-8 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.
University came up short against Cathedral in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, falling 7-2. Can the Trailblazers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
