The Gonzales Spartans pushed their score all the way to 62 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 71-62 to Monte Vista Christian. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Thursday (60), Gonzales still had to take the loss.
Monte Vista Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nico Downie led the charge by scoring 21 points along with eight rebounds and six assists. That's the first time this season that Downie pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce Brogan, who scored 21 points.
Gonzales' loss dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Monte Vista Christian, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-3.
Gonzales will take on Greenfield at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Greenfield is ranked 1186th, while Gonzales is ranked 1163rd). As for Monte Vista Christian, they will head out on the road to face off against North Salinas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully North Salinas focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Wednesday.
