The Beech Grove Hornets will face off against the Covenant Christian Warriors at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Beech Grove has given up an average of 9.1 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Beech Grove lost 11-4 to Covenant Christian on Tuesday. The Hornets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
For Covenant Christian's part, Eli Kegeris and Nolan Guzman made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Kegeris didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Guzman tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Covenant Christian is undefeated when he allows at most two earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise. At bat, Kegeris went 1-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run, while Guzman got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Those three RBI gave Kegeris a new career-high.
In other batting news, Henry Boyce was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Covenant Christian: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Ty Thomas, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Covenant Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .575. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The victory was the third in a row for Covenant Christian, bringing their record up to 10-6. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Beech Grove, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-12.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Beech Grove has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Covenant Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
