The Medway Mustangs will venture away from home to square off against the Holliston Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Medway is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.
Medway proved they can win big on Monday (they won by six) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Ashland 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since April 2nd.
The team relied heavily on Matt Wilde, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those RBI were his first of the season. Trevor Smith was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Holliston hadn't done well against Dover-Sherborn recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Panthers skirted past the Raiders 7-5.
Evan Engel tossed a big game, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Holliston is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 5-6 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Jack MacDonald and Ben Maiorano did most of the damage at the plate: MacDonald went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Maiorano went 1-for-3 with one home run. Those two runs gave MacDonald a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brent Kiley, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Holliston has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.33 runs across that stretch. As for Medway, they pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their third straight at home.
Medway skirted past Holliston 10-9 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
