Independence is 8-2 against Brooklyn since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Blue Devils will welcome the Hurricanes at 4:30 p.m. Independence is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Independence's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They put the hurt on Bard Early College with a sharp 21-0 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Blue Devils.
Anderson Jolliffe and Angelo Rodriguez made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Jolliffe pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Rodriguez pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. At bat, Jolliffe scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Rodriguez got on base in two of his four plate appearances with four RBI and one run. Those four RBI gave Rodriguez a new career-high.
In other batting news, Independence got a massive performance out of Sam Crooks, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run was Crooks' first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Vinny Carriero, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Independence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .829. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss dating back to last season. They took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of Garrett Morgan.
Brooklyn saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gio Garst, who went 1-for-3 with one triple. Justin Lewis was another, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Independence's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Brooklyn, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-3.
Brooklyn's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Independence hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. It's a different story for Brooklyn, though, as they've only averaged .191. Will they be able to contain Independence's hitters?
Everything went Independence's way against Brooklyn when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Independence made off with an 11-1 victory. Will the Blue Devils repeat their success, or do the Hurricanes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
