The Marshall Mavericks will head out to take on the Nacogdoches Dragons at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Marshall has three straight victories, Nacogdoches has ten straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Marshall will bounce into Wednesday's contest after beating Whitehouse, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mavericks sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mavericks have posted since February 13th.
Ashley Mentz made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up five earned runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Paisley Griffis was excellent, going 1-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Addi Watkins, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.
Meanwhile, Nacogdoches came up short against Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, falling 9-1.
Rodashia Robertson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with four stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Nacogdoches' defeat dropped their record down to 6-11-1. As for Marshall, their record is now 15-11-2.
Everything went Marshall's way against Nacogdoches in their previous matchup back in March, as Marshall made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mavericks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
