Downriver recap November 13, 2013
Roosevelt was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting Truman. The Bears came in at 17 in the state poll after placing at number 33 last week.
Melvindale scaled the state rankings by moving to 67 from 106 this week, the biggest jump in Downriver. The Cardinals were able to move up by defeating Milan 35-31.
Roosevelt's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Donovan Stewart threw for 145 and 2 touchdowns and Donnie Corley had 42 yards receiving. On the ground D'Aries Davis contributed 183 yards. Brandon Sowards helped Roosevelt's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 49 yards.
Davis was a passing and rushing force as Ron Adams' team bested the Cougars. Davis' favorite target this week was Corley, who caught 2 passes for 42 yards.
Davis was the best running back in the league this week. In 20 carries, he ran for 183 yards as the Bears defeated Truman. Teammate Kyle Bokun added to the ground attack by rushing for 40 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Roosevelt's Stewart and Sowards have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Stewart has thrown for 1,609 yards this season, while Sowards has 42 catches for 1,021 yards. Trenton's Christian Mercure leads the league in rushing yards with 1,297.
Davis of the the Bears is only 19 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 114 carries Davis has put up 981 yards this year.
Roosevelt added to the longest winning streak in Downriver this week by beating Eric Stiegel's team, 45-12. The victory was the 11th in a row for the Bears.
