After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Blue Valley Northwest, the Belton Pirates were happy to have found some success on Friday. They escaped with a win against Shawnee Mission South by the margin of a single free throw, 51-50. The victory was all the more spectacular given Belton's disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 284th in Missouri, while Shawnee Mission South is ranked 17th in Kansas).
Belton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jw Johnson, who scored 20 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Johnson has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kordell Williams, who scored 11 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Belton's win bumped their record up to 4-14. As for Shawnee Mission South, their loss dropped their record down to 9-4.
Belton will be playing in front of their home fans against Blue Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Shawnee Mission South, they will head out on the road to face off against Olathe North on Tuesday. Olathe North has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 655 points over their last ten matches.
