Basketball Recap: Niskayuna Comes Up Short

Niskayuna played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were dealt a 90-59 loss at the hands of the Shaker Bison. While losing is never fun, the Silver Warriors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 117th, while the Bison are ranked third).

Several Silver Warriors players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Natalie Birmingham, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards. Birmingham is also on a roll when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy, as she's posted one of at least 40% in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ava Roemer, who posted 11 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Shaker's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayla Geter, who went 9 of 13 to rack up 22 points along with six assists and five rebounds. Thanks to that strong game, Geter now owns an excellent 40.5% three-point shooting accuracy. Sofia Lanni was another key player, going 10 for 17 on her way to 21 points in addition to eight steals and six assists.

Niskayuna has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-8 record this season. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 34.2% in those games and 29.1% outside of them. As for Shaker, the victory was the 13th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-2.

Looking ahead, Niskayuna will challenge Averill Park at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Niskayuna is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.5 points per game this season. As for Shaker, they will take on Columbia at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Columbia is on a five-game streak of home wins, Shaker a five-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
