University City is on a four-game streak of home wins, while Clairemont is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The University City Centurions will host the Clairemont Chieftains at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday. University City will be strutting in after a victory while Clairemont will be coming in after a loss.
University City proved they can win big on Thursday (they won by three) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won by a set and slipped past La Jolla 3-2. While the Centurions didn't have the best season last year (they finished 14-19), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
The match was a true back-and-forth as no team won consecutive sets, but in the end it was University City who won the one that mattered. The final score came out to 26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-6.
Meanwhile, Clairemont entered their match against Scripps Ranch on Tuesday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. Clairemont fell just short of Scripps Ranch by a score of 3-2. While the Chieftains didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Falcons 25-21 in the first set.
Clairemont started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-7.
University City will have to contain Gabe Tocco as he made an impact in Clairemont's last game. He had 16 kills and seven blocks. That's the most blocks Tocco has posted over his last five contests. Another player making a difference was Makoa Miner, who had eight kills and six blocks.
Clairemont's defeat dropped their record down to 15-3. As for University City, their win bumped their record up to 10-1.
