5A Region III District 22 recap Nov. 7, 2012
Manvel extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region III District 22 this week by beating Pearland, 42-28. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Mavericks.
Dobie moved up to 425 from 479 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Longhorns climbed the ranks as a result of beating Sam Rayburn 49-17.
Manvel's dynamic duo of Shane McCarley and Carlos Thompson proved tough for the Oilers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. McCarley threw for 424 yards and five touchdowns and Thompson had 212 yards receiving. Austin Bennett helped Manvel's passing attack out by catching three balls for 87 yards.
Reggie Turner was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 208 yards on 18 carries as Pasadena Memorial topped Pearland. Ahrmon McLeod also contributed to the rushing game with 164 yards on the ground.
The Mavericks' McCarley and Thompson have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region III District 22 in both passing and receiving yards. McCarley has thrown for 3037 yards this season, while Thompson, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 52 catches for 987 yards. Turner from the Mavericks leads the league in rushing with 1251 yards.
Manvel's Thompson is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 13 receiving yards against South Houston to hit that benchmark.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Dobie takes on Tony Heath's team. At the moment, Jim Phillips' team is in fourth, while the Oilers are in second.
Pasadena Memorial led the league in scoring this week after putting up 66 points on the Trojans. Jordan Wyatt threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 124 yards in the win.
