Having been on the wrong side of plenty of lopsided scores over the past two seasons,
Lutheran South (St. Louis) football coach Matt Marty opted to lay low in the second half of Friday's 45-7 win over ABC foe Principia.
Still, Alex Lahue scored on a 23-yard run in the third quarter to extend Lutheran South's advantage to 45-0, keeping the Lancer advantage at 35 points or more throughout the second half. The clock ran continuously over the final 24 minutes, speeding up the game.
With the 38-point trouncing of the Panthers, Lutheran South ended a two-game slide against its ABC foe and pulled out the school's first conference win since knocking off John Burroughs and Priory during the 2002 league season.
"The league is so tough with such great programs with such a rich football tradition," Marty told the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "I have a ton of respect for all of the coaches in the league. They do such a good job of developing athletes. I think the seniors on this team understood the need of the work they had to do in the off-season to try to be competitive."
Dalton Schumer began the scoring in the opening quarter with a 22-yard field goal and Jordan Stoulp galloped into the end zone from eight yards out as Lutheran South led 10-0 after a quarter.
Four different Lancers reached pay dirt in the second quarter, allowing Lutheran South to build a 38-0 halftime advantage. Stoulp and Nathan Dehn reeled in scoring strikes of 32 and seven yards respectively from Justin Haun. Eddie Sterling scored on a fumble recovery and Haun crossed the goal line from two yards out to round out second quarter scoring.
Jordan Anderson hauled in a 32-yard strike from Jake Roometua in the fourth quarter to help the Panthers avoid the shutout. The win evened the Lancers' record at 2-2 on the season.
TIGERS SNAP SKID AGAINST JACKSON, MILLER UPENDS VASHONKeilon Moore's 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half extended the
Central (Cape Girardeau) advantage to 41-6 and allowed the Tigers to win their first game over the Indians since 2002.
Senior quarterback Demarco Billups tossed three touchdown passes in the first half as
Miller Career Academy (St. Louis) knocked off Vashon 21-14, securing the school's first win over the Wolverines. The Phoenix didn't start playing football until the 2004 season.
KEMPF NETS SCHOOL RUSHING RECORDBoonville running back
Kellen Kempf broke the school's single game rushing record Friday in a 41-14 win over Kirksville by rushing for 345 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Kempf, who now has 907 yards and 11 touchdowns on 91 carries for the year, broke Daven Turner's 2003 record of 328 yards against Versailles.
ROCKHURST MAKES BID FOR NO. 1As week No. 4 in Missouri came to a conclusion, one football team in Class 6 appears to have staked a claim to the Show-Me State's top ranking in the big class poll. After pulling out a 7-6 win over rival Blue Springs and surviving overtime thrillers to Hutchinson (Kan.) and Blue Springs South,
Rockhurst (Kansas City) made a statement over the weekend by shutting down Liberty 41-0.
Hazelwood Central (Florissant), meanwhile, won a fourth straight squeaker, handing Kirkwood its first loss of the season, 45-38. With the convincing win, Rockhurst vaults into the top spot over the two-time defending state champions. For now, anyway.
In order to jump back in front, the Hawks are going to have to win lopsidedly. The remaining teams on Hazelwood Central's schedule hold a collective 5-15 record so far this season. The Hawklets, meanwhile, face opponents like Columbia-Rock Bridge, Columbia-Hickman, Jefferson City and Raymore-Peculiar over the course of the next four weeks.
NEWCOMERS TO THE POLLSRock Bridge (Columbia) made a statement of its own, knocking off preseason top 5 Jefferson City, which plummets to eighth in the latest Class 6 rankings. The Bruins move in just ahead of Jefferson City at No. 7.
In Class 5,
Park Hill (Kansas City) thoroughly knocked off Truman 61-20.
Union jumped into the Class 4 rankings on the strength of a 49-0 shutout of Hermann.
Joining the Class 3 rankings for the first time in 2010 is
Springfield Catholic, a 20-13 winner over last week's No. 2 team Logan-Rogersville, which dropped to seventh after suffering its first loss of the season.
Caruthersville dropped Hayti 20-12 to improve its record to 4-0 and joins the Class 2 rankings at ninth, while
Lamar creeps in at No. 10 after dispatching of Monett 27-21.
Pierce City won 43-6 over Greenfield and joins the Class 1 rankings at No. 10.
