The Vista Grande Spartans will take on the Sunnyside Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Vista Grande's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They put the hurt on Mountain View with a sharp 9-0 win. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Mountain Lions recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Not much got past Jayan Ybarra, who gave up just a hit and racked up 11 Ks to keep Mountain View off the board. Ybarra also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Vista Grande is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 9-11-1 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ruben Baca, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Vista Grande's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 9-12-1 when he doesn't). Thomas Ortega also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Vista Grande kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Sunnyside had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Red Wolves as they made off with a 13-3 win.
Sunnyside got a big performance out of JORGE RUIZ, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. RUIZ is on a roll when it comes to hits, as he's now got three or more in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of SABINO GONZALEZ, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Sunnyside's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-8. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Vista Grande, the victory got them back to even at 12-12-1.
Vista Grande couldn't quite finish off Sunnyside in their previous meeting back in March of 2015 and fell 7-5. Will the Spartans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
