The Pacific Northwest will play host to a new postseason high school basketball showcase event this spring.
The inaugural West Coast All-Star Classic will be played May 11 at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., and features an impressive roster of college-bound standouts.
"This event will be a first for our area," said legendary
Rainier Beach (Seattle) head coach Mike Bethea, who has led his Vikings to Class 3A state titles each of the past two seasons. "For years West Coast kids have had to travel east to showcase their talents and play against their peers.
"Now, many of the country's top best basketball players will come west where we have some very good players who have flown under the national media radar."
Among the headliners in the event will be two-time Oregon Class 6A player of the year
Calvin Hermanson, silky-smooth UCLA-bound guard
Zach LaVine and 6-foot-9 forward
Eric Mika, who helped
Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) earn the No. 1 national ranking by MaxPreps this season.
Future Washington Huskies
Darin Johnson and
Jahmel Taylor will also participate, giving local fans a glimpse of their college hoops future.
A slam dunk and 3-point contest will take place Friday night at Rainier Beach.
