The Punxsutawney Chucks will venture away from home to square off against the St. Marys Flying Dutch at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Punxsutawney is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Punxsutawney will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Philipsburg-Osceola on Thursday. The Chucks skirted past the Mountaineers 10-9. The Chucks haven't had any issues with the Mountaineers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Coy Martino made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three runs and two doubles.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddox Hetrick, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Mason Noerr also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Marys). They were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over Brookville on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Flying Dutch, who have now won four contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Punxsutawney, St. Marys also got a great game from a two-way player: Ben Paul. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over six innings pitched. Paul was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, St. Marys let TYSEN BEIMEL and Jackson Vollmer run wild. BEIMEL went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Vollmer went 2-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI. St. Marys is undefeated when BEIMEL posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Nicklas, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
St. Marys always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Punxsutawney's record is now 8-2. As for St. Marys, their record now sits at 6-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Punxsutawney has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like St. Marys struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Punxsutawney's way against St. Marys in their previous meeting back in March, as Punxsutawney made off with a 10-4 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Chucks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
