Ponaganset is on a three-game streak of home wins, while the Bengals are on a six-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Ponaganset Chieftains will take on the St. Mary Academy-Bay View Bengals at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Last Friday, Ponaganset was fully in charge, breezing past the Vikings 55-23 at home. Given Ponaganset's advantage in MaxPreps' Rhode Island basketball rankings (they are ranked tenth, while the Vikings are ranked 48th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ponaganset got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jaina Yekelchik out in front who scored nine points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kelsey L'heureux, who scored five points along with three blocks.
Meanwhile, St. Mary Academy-Bay View scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They put the hurt on Classical with a sharp 66-43 win.
Ponaganset is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for St. Mary Academy-Bay View, their win bumped their record up to 13-4.
Ponaganset was able to grind out a solid victory over the Bengals when the teams last played back in December of 2023, winning 39-30. Will Ponaganset repeat their success, or do the Bengals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
