Monroe-Woodbury is 9-1 against Newburgh Free Academy since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Crusaders will look to defend their home field against the Goldbacks at 4:15 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Monroe-Woodbury has struggled recently with four losses in a row, while Newburgh Free Academy will arrive with three straight wins.
Monroe-Woodbury couldn't beat Kingston on Wednesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the first inning. The Crusaders fell 9-5 to the Tigers. While the Crusaders didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Tigers 4-0 in the first period.
Gabby Schaeffer was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Callie Exarchakis, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Newburgh Free Academy hadn't done well against Middletown recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Goldbacks came out on top against the Middie Bears by a score of 7-3.
Ryan Keller spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Newburgh Free Academy let Parker Mullarkey and Ashlyn LeClair run wild. Mullarkey went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run, while LeClair went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those three hits gave LeClair a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Camryn LeClair, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Newburgh Free Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 14 hits in three consecutive contests.
Newburgh Free Academy now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Monroe-Woodbury, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-5.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Monroe-Woodbury hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. However, it's not like Newburgh Free Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .333. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
