Basketball Recap: Spanish River Takes a Loss

After flying high against Benjamin on Monday, Spanish River came back down to earth. The Spanish River Sharks had to suffer through a 65-35 loss at the hands of the Pine Crest Panthers. While losing is never fun, the Sharks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 464th, while the Panthers are ranked 79th).

Spanish River's loss on Tuesday came despite strong showings from Ellie Neuman and Briella DaSilva. Neuman posted five points and 12 rebounds, while DaSilva earned 12 points. What's more, Neuman also racked up four assists, the most she's had since back in January of 2024.

Even though they lost, Spanish River smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.

Pine Crest was led to victory by Franky Garfi and Isabella Sangha. Garfi dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds, while Sangha dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sangha has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more boards the last ten times she's played. Another player making a difference was Natasha Sangha, who put up eight points.

Spanish River has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season. As for Pine Crest, they pushed their record up to 9-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home.

Spanish River will take on Jupiter at 7:30 p.m. on January 21st. As for Pine Crest, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against American Heritage at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Pine Crest is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.2 points per game this season.
