The Hughesville Spartans will face off against the Athens Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hughesville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
While Hughesville's victory against Bloomsburg wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Spartans won by a run and slipped past the Panthers 5-4. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Dylan McConnell was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. Blake Babb was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Hughesville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They are 6-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Athens got the win against Wyalusing Valley on Thursday by a conclusive 11-1. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by six runs or more this season.
Kamdyn Wheeler spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on one hit.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brady Flynn, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Troy Rosenbloom, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.
Athens' victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Hughesville, their victory bumped their record up to 8-6.
Saturday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hughesville has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447. However, it's not like Athens struggles in that department as they've averaged .505. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
