The Southport Cardinals's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their 12th straight loss. They took a serious blow against Shelbyville, falling 61-20. While losing is never fun, Southport can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 344th, while Shelbyville is ranked 118th).
Several Cardinals players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Teasia Bibbs, who scored eight points. Sophia Nguyen was another key contributor, scoring two points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Ava Wilson continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Shelbyville, scoring 24 points along with six steals. The contest was Wilson's 16th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Hannah Baker, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Southport's defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 1-15. As for Shelbyville, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-6.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southport will take on Terre Haute North Vigo at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Terre Haute North Vigo has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Shelbyville, they will be playing at home against Yorktown at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Yorktown focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Tuesday.
