Sandia is a perfect 8-0 against Santa Fe since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Matadors will host the Demons at 10:00 a.m. Sandia has given up an average of 7.2 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Sandia is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Volcano Vista, who was ranked sixth at the time (Sandia was ranked 19th). The Matadors came up short against the Hawks on Wednesday, falling 19-9. The Matadors' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Destiny Romero led a balanced group of hitters, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Mia Duran was another key player, going 1-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe hadn't done well against Espanola Valley recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Demons came out on top against the Sundevils by a score of 6-1. The win was some much needed relief for the Demons as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Leah Gutierrez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 12 Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on A'Mya Jeselink, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Jessi Lopez, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Sandia's defeat dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Santa Fe, their victory bumped their record up to 4-10.
Santa Fe's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sandia has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.3 hits per game. It's a different story for Santa Fe, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Sandia's sizable advantage in that area, the Demons will need to find a way to close that gap.
Sandia got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in April of 2025 against Santa Fe by a conclusive 18-2 score. Will the Matadors repeat their success, or do the Demons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
