The Philip Simmons Iron Horses fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They slipped by Carvers Bay 51-50 on Thursday.
Philip Simmons found their leader in underclassman Kenira Holmes, who scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. That's the first time this season that Holmes scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tia Chaney, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Several Bears players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jasmyn Jenkins, who scored 22 points. Jerchel Geathers-Washington was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Carvers Bay smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Philip Simmons only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
Philip Simmons' win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-9. As for Carvers Bay, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-8.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Philip Simmons will take on Hanahan at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Hanahan is ranked 132nd, while Philip Simmons is ranked 126th). As for Carvers Bay, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Loris at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Loris focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 30 last Wednesday.
