Amherst County and Liberty are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2017, but not for long. Both teams will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Amherst County has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Last Friday, Amherst County came up short against Jefferson Forest and fell 61-49. Amherst County has struggled against Jefferson Forest recently, as their match on Friday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Despite their defeat, Amherst County saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Syrell McQueen, who scored 14 points along with two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Ania Thompson was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Liberty had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They came out on top against Chatham by a score of 43-33. Given Liberty's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 39th, while Chatham is ranked 284th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Amherst County now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Liberty, their win bumped their record up to 11-2.
Amherst County came up short against Liberty in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 56-47. Thankfully for Amherst County, Iyana Sigei (who almost dropped a triple-double on nine points, ten assists, and 14 steals) won't be suiting up this time.
