After 15 years as the Sequoyah High School head football coach, Sid Maxwell has decided it is time for a new challenge according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The veteran coach with more wins than any coach in Cherokee County history will be the coach of the startup program at Lambert High School in Forsyth County.
Maxwell went 97-67 during his span at Sequoyah. This season the Chiefs were 10-2, finishing ranked No. 7 in Class AAAA. Last season they made it all the way to the quarterfinals in Class AAAAA where they lost to the eventual champion Lowndes Vikings.
Maxwell, who will coach at the fifth school to open its doors in Forsyth County, could not be reached for comment.
Ealey, Reid Headline GACA All-Star Teams
The GACA All-Star North and South teams have been selected and many of the players involved should come as no surprise to anyone who follows Georgia high school football.
Leading the charge are Washaun Ealey of Emanuel County Institute and Greg Reid of Lowndes. Ealey set a career record for touchdowns earlier this season and is a Georgia Bulldog recruit. Reid is headed to Florida.
Both players will suit up for the South team. For complete rosters, click here.
The game will be held in Columbus Dec. 29.
Vying for Defensive Back Branden Smith
Brandon Smith, a defensive back for Booker T. Washington, took a recruiting tour in Athens over this past weekend. The cornerback is high on Mark Richt’s wish list and is compared to former Bulldog Champ Bailey.
Smith has also been recruited by Florida, Florida State and Alabama. Georgia is considered to be in the lead for his services but will not know for sure until Jan. 4 when he is expected to make a decision.
Basketball: Deep South Classic Getting in Gear
The annual Deep South Classic, which takes place in Gwinnett County at Brookwood High School, has a different look to it this year.
Instead of a four-day, 32-team tournament played at two high school gyms, it will be a three-day, 16-team tournament at one school.
The tournament, which has been around since 1991, normally features a few out of state teams but this year is an exception to that. Games will start on Saturday, Dec. 27 and will end on Dec. 30. No games will be played on Sunday, Dec. 28.
Wesleyan swept both the boys and girls’ brackets last year.
Boys: Brookwood, Grayson, Greater Atlanta Christian, Loganville, North Cobb, Peachtree Ridge, South Cobb, South Forsyth
Girls: Brookwood, Buford, Grayson, Greater Atlanta Christian, Loganville, North Cobb, Northwest Whitfield, Peachtree Ridge
